KARAR.EXE

A pixel-art campus you actually walk around, with the CV hidden inside mini-games. Built to prove a point about what a portfolio is allowed to be.

Posteroids built KARAR.EXE, a portfolio presented as a playable pixel-art campus. Instead of a scrolling page of project cards, the visitor walks a character around a small world where the CV, the projects and the skills are embedded in places and mini-games to be found. It exists to demonstrate that a portfolio site does not have to mean three cards and a PDF.

The argument

Every portfolio site in a given field looks like every other one, because they are all built from the same template logic: hero, three project cards, an about paragraph, a contact form. The result is that a portfolio — the one artefact whose entire job is to distinguish you — is the most homogeneous page on the internet.

KARAR.EXE takes the opposite position: the portfolio is itself the strongest work sample, so it should be the most interesting thing in the tab.

What was built

The KARAR.EXE boot screen: KARAR_OS v1.0 initialising, mounting /dev/campus and loading a player profile, ending in PRESS ANY KEY — TAP TO START.
The boot screen. You know what kind of page you are on before it finishes loading.

When this is the wrong idea

Most of the time. A game portfolio is right when your field rewards demonstrated technical range and playfulness, and wrong when your buyer wants to check a credential in forty seconds and leave. A corporate lawyer should not have this website.

The transferable point is smaller and applies to everyone: your portfolio should be built around your work and your buyer, which is precisely what a template cannot do. That is the case for a custom portfolio site, whether or not it involves a spaceship.
