How much does a website cost in the US?
Real 2026 US prices by who is building it, why the spread is so wide, and the three questions that collapse most of it.
A website in the US costs between $16 a month and $150,000 in 2026, depending on who builds it and what it does. A DIY builder runs $16–$50 a month. A US freelancer charges $3,000–$10,000 for a small business site. A US agency charges $8,000–$25,000 for the same brief. A web application with accounts and payments runs $40,000–$150,000 from a US agency. An offshore studio builds comparable websites for $600–$4,000 and web apps for $3,000–$12,000.
Why the spread is so wide
US web pricing looks irrational until you notice that the number is set by the builder’s cost base, not by the difficulty of the work. An agency quoting $18,000 for a brochure site is paying US salaries, US rent, US healthcare, and a salesperson’s commission on your project. They are not overcharging. The number follows from the structure.
Which means the useful question is not "what should this cost" but "which cost base am I buying, and do I need what it pays for".
| Who builds it | Small business site | Web app / MVP | What the premium buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY builder | $16 – $50/mo | n/a | Nothing but the tool. Your time is the cost. |
| Offshore studio | $600 – $4,000 | $3,000 – $12,000 | A different cost base. Same work, no US overhead. |
| US freelancer | $3,000 – $10,000 | $15,000 – $60,000 | Your time zone, your language, your legal system. |
| US agency | $8,000 – $25,000 | $40,000 – $150,000 | Process, contracts, continuity, someone to sue. |
| Brand agency | $25,000 – $100,000+ | $150,000+ | Strategy, research, a brand system. Real, and rarely what an SMB needs. |

The three questions that collapse the spread
- Is the design custom or a theme? A configured WordPress theme and a bespoke design are different products with the same name. This one question explains most of the gap between a $1,500 quote and a $15,000 one.
- Who writes the copy? If the answer is you, the project will take twice as long as quoted, because almost nobody finishes writing their own website. If the agency writes it, that is real work and real cost, and it is worth paying for.
- Do users log in? The moment you need accounts you have a web application, and the floor moves to $3,000 offshore or $40,000 domestically. Everything else is a rounding error next to this.
The recurring costs
| Item | Typical annual cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | $12 – $20/yr | Register in your own name, with your email on the account. |
| Hosting | $0 – $600/yr | A static site is free on a modern edge platform. WordPress needs real hosting. |
| SSL | $0 | Free and automatic. Being charged for this is a warning sign. |
| Maintenance | $0 – $30,000/yr | US agencies charge $500–$2,500/mo; offshore is roughly a tenth of that. Many static sites need nothing. |
| Premium plugins / licences | $0 – $500/yr | A WordPress-specific tax. Custom builds usually have none. |
How to spend less without buying worse
- Cut pages before you cut quality. A sharp five-page site beats a vague fifteen-page one, and costs a third as much.
- Write the copy facts yourself, not the copy. Supply the specifics — numbers, names, dates — and let the builder write. That is the split that actually saves money.
- Skip the CMS if you post twice a year. It is real build cost for capability you will not use.
- Defer the app. If the site and the product can ship separately, ship the site first and learn something before committing to the expensive half.
- Consider offshore for the build and local for the strategy if you genuinely need both. Paying US agency rates for production hours is the expensive way to buy them.
Common questions
- How much does a website cost in the US?
- In 2026: $16–$50 a month for a DIY builder, $3,000–$10,000 from a US freelancer, $8,000–$25,000 from a US agency, and $600–$4,000 from an offshore studio. A web application costs $40,000–$150,000 from a US agency or $3,000–$12,000 offshore.
- How much should a small business website cost?
- In the US, $3,000–$10,000 buys a professionally built small business site from a freelancer, and $8,000–$25,000 from an agency. Below $2,000 domestically you are almost certainly getting a configured template. The same scope from an offshore studio runs $1,200–$4,000.
- Why are US web design prices so much higher than offshore?
- Cost base, not scope. A US developer’s salary, healthcare, rent and the agency’s sales overhead all sit inside the quote. A studio in Lahore or Warsaw does the same work against a different cost structure. The saving is real; the risks are communication, time zones and having no practical legal recourse, which is why you pay in stages and own your code from day one.
- Is Squarespace or Wix good enough for a business?
- For plenty of businesses, yes — and you should hear that before spending $10,000. If your site exists so people can find you, see what you do and get in touch, a DIY builder does that job for $16–$50 a month. It stops being enough when the site has to win business against competitors who invested in theirs, when you need a custom checkout, or when looking like a template is itself the problem.
- How much does it cost to maintain a website in the US?
- US agencies charge $500–$2,500 a month for maintenance retainers; freelancers $300–$1,000; offshore studios around $150. Many well-built static sites genuinely need nothing beyond a domain renewal. The cost scales with how much machinery your site is carrying — WordPress with a dozen plugins needs real maintenance, a static site mostly does not.
- Is it safe to hire an offshore web developer from the US?
- Yes, with structural protections rather than legal ones: see working code on a live URL before paying, pay in stages against delivered work, own the repository and domain from day one, and require a conventional stack another developer can take over. Cross-border legal recourse on a small project is not realistically worth pursuing, so the aim is to structure the deal so the worst case is losing one milestone.
